David Robinson, the NBA legend, traded his basketball for a shovel on Friday morning to help Habitat for Humanity celebrate new San Antonio homeowners.

The event marked Habitat for Humanity San Antonio's 50th anniversary, with Robinson joining dozens of volunteers to spread grass and plant trees around eight newly completed homes.

What happened?

Robinson was joined by his son, David Robinson Jr., and his grandson, making it a family affair as they worked together to prepare the neighborhood for its newest residents.

The Hall of Famer spent much of the morning planting trees and speaking with volunteers, including students from the Robinson Fellowship program.

Why it matters for David Robinson

Robinson emphasized the importance of community service, stating that it's a core part of the fellowship program he founded, and that helping families achieve homeownership creates a lasting impact.

"Habitat for Humanity is a tremendous organization that's been doing a lot of work in communities for a long time," Robinson said.

What comes next?

Spurs Sports & Entertainment was recognized for supporting Habitat for Humanity's 50th anniversary efforts, with Patricia Mejia, the organization's chief impact and inclusion officer, praising the nonprofit's leadership and community partners.

As of 2023, Habitat for Humanity San Antonio has served thousands of families and recently celebrated the completion of its 1,500th home in Bexar County.

The nonprofit provides working families with a pathway to homeownership through 0% interest mortgages, with the goal of creating stability and opportunities for future generations.

And with the help of volunteers like Robinson, Habitat for Humanity continues to make a difference in the lives of San Antonio families.

But the impact of homeownership goes beyond just the families themselves, with Mejia stating that it would have a far greater and more lasting impact on their lives than any basketball game.

So the work of Habitat for Humanity and its supporters, including Robinson, is crucial in creating a better future for the community.
